Dr. Julia Atkins, with New West Physicians on Johnson Road, is a true heroine in my book and I am guessing in many other people’s as well. When I was having a hard time getting diagnosed for a health condition, she always came to my rescue and got me through the next stage. Whether it was with visits or tests that other doctors refused to provide, she always fought for me to get the treatment I needed. And, I knew she had my best interest at heart. -- testimony from a patient.
Carol Ann Bowles
Carol Ann Bowles was hired by the Golden Chamber of Commerce in 1992 as a part-time bookkeeper and volunteer in charge of tourist information.
Golden's Christmas activities amounted to lighting a huge Christmas Tree on a Friday night. One of the Chamber’s Board members asked Carol Ann to come up with an activity to replace the tree lighting. She contacted many of the local schools, churches, and Civic Organizations to provide hot cider for those individuals that would come out for the lighting of the tree and singing of Christmas Carols. The first year there were about 100 people in attendance. Twenty-six years later the event has grown to include a candle light walk that 8,000 people attend, three Saturday parades with hundreds in attendance in downtown Golden, breakfast with Santa at one of the local churches, and participation with most of the downtown businesses.
Phyllis is sometimes referred to as “Waldo” because she is here there and everywhere when it comes to preserving all that is good and right for education in our community. Phyllis retired from Jeffco Schools in 2000 after 32 years as a teacher and counselor. After retirement she aligned herself with JCEA-R, Support Jeffco Kids and Democratic pro-public education elected officials. She has continued to volunteer to work information tables, go door-to-door, make phone calls, donate money, and speak to legislators to ensure that every child in Jeffco and throughout the state have access to quality public education. Phyllis says she operates on adrenaline and passion. It certainly was visible this last fall, as she worked to pass Amendment 73 and 5A & 5B with Great Education Colorado and Support Jeffco Kids.
